We need bees. Ecosystem health, biodiversity and food security are all dependant on these hard-working little pollinators. Over 20,000 species of bee exist globally, and in Australia alone there more than 1600 described and named bee species – but there could be as many as 2000 or 3000! Just like the European honeybee, Australian native bees are proficient pollinators, especially of our native plants.
But bees all over the world are dying at alarming rates. Land clearing, high-density housing and small flowerless gardens are just a few factors contributing to their plight.
This World Bee Day, we invite you to join us for this #actsofconnection webinar to learn more about the importance of bees, the threats they face, and what actions you can take to create more bee-friendly landscapes. The session will include a guest presentation by Tim Uebergang, Curator of Horticulture at The University of Melbourne’s Systems Garden, who will be showcasing the learning garden’s unique chimney beehive and stunning new insect hotel.
