AUGUST 2020 EDITION
CHANGES COMING TO ACTS GOVERNANCE (IN A GOOD WAY!)
At a Special General Meeting of the ACTS membership on 28 July a unanimous decision was made to adopt a new organisational constitution to support ACTS evolving from an incorporated Association based in Queensland, Australia to becoming an Australian Company Limited by Guarantee. This change was supported by independent legal advice to modernise ACTS governance that will deliver a number of advantages, including:
  • Increased flexibility of Board Membership
  • Federally and internationally recognised structure
  • Improved integration with Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) reducing likelihood of duplicated reporting
  • More favourable liability profile for directors of not-for-profit acting as responsible persons in good faith.
What doesn’t change:
  • Members make ‘big picture’ decisions, including whether to change the governing document (including its purpose), appointment of Office holders and decisions about winding up the organisation
  • Office holders are responsible for the day to day operations and governance of the organisation, such as setting the policies and ensuring compliance with legal obligations
  • Support for international members and office holders
  • ABN, employees and contractual relationships.
With this membership approval, over the next few months the ACTS Board will undertake the formal migration process required (and in time for the next AGM!).

EMERGING ISSUES
AASHE CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Higher education has changed dramatically since we closed our call for proposals in early March. A global pandemic has led to major changes in how campuses operate, with significant implications for sustainability. Similarly, the widespread protests against racism sparked by the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and many others has caused institutions to more closely examine the ways in which they perpetuate white supremacy. To ensure that the content at the Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education (GCSHE) reflects these developments, AASHE is hosting this supplementary Emerging Issues Call for Proposals.

Submission period closes on August 14.

16–20 NOVEMBER

Over the years EAUC has been at the forefront of incredible global initiatives by inspiring, celebrating and advancing the critical role that education has in delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the SDG Accord and the International Green Gown Awards.
