Professor Ian Lowe AO has degrees in engineering and physics. He is currently emeritus professor of science, technology and society at Griffith University in Brisbane, an adjunct professor at Sunshine Coast University and an honorary research fellow at the University of Adelaide. The author of 18 books and more than 500 other publications, Professor Lowe’s contributions to environmental science have won him a Centenary Medal, the Eureka Prize for promotion of science, the Prime Minister’s Environment Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement, the Queensland Premier’s Millennium Award for Excellence in Science, and the University of NSW Alumni Award for achievement in science. Professor Lowe was named Humanist of the Year in 1988 and made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2001. Professor Lowe is the current President of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), a position he has held since 2004.

The School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning seeks to appoint a professor who will be appointed as Discipline Head, Environment and Planning. Reporting to the Dean, the Discipline Head will provide academic leadership and vision, and assist with the management and strategic leadership of the Environment and Planning area in the School.

Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

·                       Contributing to the academic and professional leadership of the School by leading the planning, development and implementation of an integrated and effective academic strategy within the Discipline,

·                       Enhancing the research culture by the conduct and publishing research on themes related to the strategic research directions of the Environment and Planning area

·                       Co-ordinating and teaching courses in the general area of Environment and Planning and supervising postgraduate and research students in relevant areas of competence and interest.

·                       Managing the staff of the Discipline to ensure high quality learning outcomes for students and, through recruitment, induction, staff development, and work planning, ensure professional satisfaction and accountability for staff.

A PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline is required, with experience in the management of an academic unit or department highly desirable.
